Series "Film Funding Hamburg"
It began as an image brochure
containing 6 portraits that was supposed to present the city of Hamburg
and at the same time the people who live and work in Hamburg. Art
Director Arne Kluge had given me carte blanche for the selection of the
material and the format, and therefore basically also regarding the
look of the pictures and the brochure.
However, as a colour brochure
was required and I definitely prefer black and white for portraits, we
agreed to take the portrait photos on 8 x 10" B/W Polaroids and the
colour pictures on 8 x 10" colour Polaroids. The large format has its
advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is the slow
evolution of the pictures, which is a great thing especially with
actors as they (unlike many models) are capable of presenting truly
different interpretations of themselves and are also genuinely able and
above all willing to work on them.
Naturally, instant
photos are the ideal partner because you immediately see what you have
on film and can really stop at the moment when you are holding a great
picture in your hands.
I took the photographs
almost exclusively with three focal lengths, namely
Super-Angulon 8.0/165 mm,
Apo-Symmar 5.6/300 mm and
Apo-Symmar 6.8/360 mm,
either using daylight or with
the help of a single Profoto flash with a battery pack and a softbox.

All the portraits were taken at
one of the Hamburg locations suggested by the actor or director
concerned. These locations always had a direct connection to the
subject, the last film, the next film or in some cases a private
reference (The First Kiss - Jürgen Vogel / The Parental Home - Fatih
Akin). I always shot the colour pictures at these locations after the
actor/director had been photographed.
The result was a beautiful, at
times very personal series about Hamburg and people who come from
Hamburg or have chosen to
live there.
